This was an insightful discussion on various aspects of Tesla Autopilot that I hope catalyzes further nuanced conversation on the future of AI-assisted driving. Starts at 2:35. The full outline of the video is as follows: 0:00 Introduction 2:35 Start of conversation: Autopilot motivation 4:01 Display the vehicle's perception of the driving scene 7:11 Algorithms, data, and hardware development 10:23 Edge cases and common cases in driving 12:18 Navigate on Autopilot 13:57 Hardware and software path toward fully autonomy 17:08 Driver supervision of Autopilot 20:13 Human side of Tesla Autopilot (driver functional vigilance) 23:13 Driver monitoring 24:30 Operational design domain 26:57 Securing Autopilot against adversarial machine learning 28:29 Narrow AI and artificial general intelligence 30:10 Physics view of love 31:53 First question for an artificial general intelligence system
@Jeffery Ricardo Whoa! It took about 15 mins but it actually worked!
@lexfridman YOU SUCK
Why did you let Elon slide on asserting "FSD computer is absolutely capable of full autonomy" ? If they're still figuring out the software for full autonomy, how can he so confidently claim that whatever future software they need will be able to run on their current hardware. That's a pretty substantial claim with little to back it up.
i bet elon offered you a job
Did anyone catch what happened at 26:40? I’m confused about what Elon said - seems like he didn’t want to answer anymore question about humans but I could be wrong lol
Brilliant interview. Thank you so much, Lex! (Why do you suppose there is such a significant delay in Elon's release-date expectations on auto-drive/auto-park. Is it that it isn't yet 2X better than human, or regulations, or combination?)
who wants to see lex elon motivaiton?
Suggestion for your EQ? Lower the bass just a bit, or raise your mids slightly on the output of your SM7Bs.
Check out your DNA, you are Uighur.
It takes a human to look at the face of another human in order to judge awareness and capability of the other human. When is a computer is as sensitive to human behavior as a bartender I'll hold back my cynicism.
32:04 CPU running at 100%; processing 12 seconds; output: "What's outside the simulation" (32:16); -> System.pause(); -> System.restart(); -> Woke up();
watch Elon's eyes while he is thinking about the last answer of the podcast. He is like a machine searching a database in his mind, amazing.

My main concern is a lot of radiation on Mars and I'm worried about Astronauts getting radiation exposure.
Never owned $TSLA stock? You missed out
What isn't discussed here is unforseen oppression to human drivers that wish to drive and remain in their personal field of potential. Let's say I drive as I wish, then I'm suddenly surrounded by Let's say a 5 to 1 ratio of ai driven cars to human driven. At that point, the ai cars would know what each other will do, but not know what I will do , making me the x factor. The insurance company may tell me, Chris, if you wish to drive, you'll need to pay a higher rate, or perhaps even disallow me driving due to statistical analysis of ai driven efficiency. It's not a reach to then see destinations being approved, pretrip. Then destinations not approved. What would that imply to the human field of potential.
I suggest a name for this technology, oedipus Rex. A Greek tragedy where the son kills the father and marries the mother.
Is it possible that this Elon Musk guy is from the future and is building spaceships , cars and connecting brain and computer that he has already known but do it in such a gradual , systematic way so we don’t pick up on it. He is not building something new as far as he is concerned .
That last question seemed to me like if an AGI, was talking to another AGI, about asking an AGI-that-might-be... about the meaning of it all. The pause that Elon needed to take to answer that question, the only time in the hole interview... makes me sure that's indeed the case.
Black Tesla in the background through the window Lex is in front of?
Look at Elons ayes looks like hes reading something all the time !
Hanno un obiettivo eliminarmi aspettano solo il momento giusto
I would love an interview with Alex Karp or Peter Thiel (Abcellera and Palantir)
Anyone has the paper published?
damn, lex knows how to end an interview
I like this stoned Jew
25:00 there are at least 5 reasons why this particular exchange is so funny
WHATS outside the simulation.
its 2021 and AI has UPDATED a lot.
It's great how elon looks at things. Especially the driver monitoring. The question was posed because what seems to be a limitation of the driving system, but Elon changed the perspective and said once the driving system is better than a human, the point of monitoring the driver is, well, pointless.
What's outside the simulation???? .... Answer: God
I love technology, but I have to say I prefer to drive my car myself. I enjoy it and there is less chance of my car being hijacked. I want control over my vehicle. If I didn't want to drive I would get an uber or take a train.
"It's like ADD" ROFL
Great interview and autopilot discussion on this one eh? Gotta account for us in 1980’s 400hp street monsters out here in Reno Mr. Musk!! Moved to Reno in 17 to work on automation first with a dream of doing autopilot design but got hosed by a recruiter and ended up fired after a management change..
You can ride a horse where no car will ever go
I know I’m late to the party here, but that into earned my subscription.
It is 2% eye contact interview.
The pathetic chest complementarily smell because creek directly pack along a cultured playground. brainy, disastrous forest
Anyone against self driving cars are just mad they won't be able to speed
Not one mention of K.I.T.T.!!
BOOOOOOORING! LEX IS BORING.
The way Elon's eyes moves before answering the last question... His software almost had a bug
whats outside the simulation
This is a gem! Brilliant questions and brilliant answers. Thank you.
I would not pay 5 to 10 times more for an autonomous car
Good lord, your disclaimer at the beginning to keep the trolls at bay is ridiculous lol
That ending tho
“Well, frankly, it’s crazy letting people drive a two-ton death machine manually.” 🤣 I love Elon. Check.
The crooked thunderstorm unquestionably tap because layer perplexingly copy below a flashy otter. deranged, plausible lumber
They finally got together for a talk! Time for another one though! Longer please!
It sounds like Elon has some bad experience with elevators :D Jokes aside, great podcast.
This is some of my favorite content on ISnets. Thank you, Lex!!!
Watch at 1.25x speed at least. Maybe 1.5x. Your welcome.
I think self driving cars are waste. Higher level driver support is better, else its just a TV remote control case. A machine do something humans can, but it brings more comfort. Oh I know for sure computers can drive better and safer than humans. But the need for full auto cars are questionable. Its more or less a personal commuter train wagon. Why not make a fleet of shared transport pods? I prefer active, waken drivers
where are the million self driving taxis?
I just had the most hysterical laugh of my life at this moment 24:56. It's like 2 robots being sarcastic!
I love most of what Elon does 🙌 and we all can agree on everything ... however , his view on the future of self driving is too based on safety and eliminates the aspect I relate to Elon highly ...... Fun ! Haha we will always have vehicles we can have fun with , self driving cars is great but I will hold my choice and won’t let other people’s fear of harm stop me living . I don’t want a safe bubble I am happy with life 🙌 yes safety 🎯 yes consideration 🎯 No to giving up self responsibility 🎯 people have been lead into a mindless state of consideration as opposed to a mindful one . If we change ourselves the robots won’t see to change us . We need to address our own psychology so we don’t continue to create a life where we are less and less trusted and more and more controlled . Awareness is key to how we use our tech and our minds and our hearts 🎯“ what’s outside the simulation” Boom . Let’s find out haha ✌️💚☯️🔱🐺🦅
Did he say driver based camera monitoring? No fooking thanks, Lex.
This is the PBS of podcasts
"It's going to seem like a mad thing, in the future, that people were driving cars." - Elon Musk You don't realize what a mad world it is until you step back for a second and think about it
I know this doesn't have anything to do with the video, but I would like to share these questions and this message with as many people as possible. 1. What do you think happens to someone after they die? 2. Do you think there is an afterlife? 3. If heaven exists, how do you get there? 4. Do you think you are good enough to get into heaven? I'm definitely not good enough to get into heaven. Here are a few questions to test your goodness: 1. How many lies have you told in your whole life? 2. Have you ever stolen? 3. Have you ever used God's name in vain? 4. Jesus said that "whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Have you ever looked with lust? 5. If you have broken any of these commandments, would you be innocent or guilty on Judgment Day? 6. Would you go to Heaven or Hell? The Bible says that "all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone" (Revelation 21:8) and "Those who indulge in sexual sin, or who worship idols, or commit adultery, or are male prostitutes, or practice homosexuality, or are thieves, or greedy people, or drunkards, or are abusive, or cheat people - none of these will inherit the Kingdom of God" (1 Corinthians 6:9-10). So, if you are guilty of any of the ten commandments, then you are in trouble when Judgment Day comes! Do you know what God did for guilty sinners so that we wouldn't have to go to Hell? 2,000 years ago, God became a human being, Jesus of Nazareth, who suffered and died on the cross for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day, defeating death. The punishment that we deserve for breaking God's law, Jesus took in our place. He paid the fine that we could never pay so that God can legally set us free by forgiving our sins. He is just, by punishing evil through Jesus' death on the cross, while being rich in mercy towards us. What you have to do is repent, or turn toward God, and believe in Jesus Christ. Don't trust your own goodness, because, as Jesus said, "No one is good - except God alone" (Mark 10:18). Trust alone in the savior. The moment you do that, God will forgive every sin you have ever committed and grant you eternal life, and He will give you a new heart with new desires, so that you will love to do what is right. You will be born again. But you must repent and trust in Jesus. When are you going to do that? Here is a short Christian movie on this subject and depression: isnets.info/main/mZTV3KqOsYKppsk/v-deo.html
Wow, this interview was amazing.
Tesla, the worlds best toaster.
Classical equivalency is air travel. We get on and off airplanes flown by anonymous pilots relying on air traffic control, safe airport runways.... Interesting fact that when Apollo 8 made the first manned trip to the moon the spacecraft was facing earth. They did not see the moon until they entered orbit. They actually flew to the moon by entering earth orbit first and then performing a precise Saturn stage reignition which placed them into a higher eliptical earth orbit that was eventually captured by the moon's gravitational attraction. They used classical centuries old Newtonian mechanics.
EM: "If you buy a Tesla you are buying an appreciating asset...: CYNIC: "If you buy a Tesla you are buying a big battery with wheels..."
Computers in general and AI are not as difficult to understand as they appear. Computers in general are a "hack" of the simplest aspects of the human nervous system. Lex is correct because most think in the forward superiority of AI over biology. Lex sees the limbic system correctly. Although more primitive to primate brain development, the evolutionary "learning* by natural selection actually lead to development of our more complex underlying biology.
Holy f-ing s*"t!!! 🤯🤯 The last question + time used to really think + the answer !!!!! 🤯🤯🤯🙌🙌

Musk is a dangerous man. He would kill the human spirit....
Speaking of autonomous vehicles? the horse is autonomous, reproduces itself, is powered with one of the cheapest fuels, raw grass? a the construction and dismantling and recycling of such bio-vehicles is perfectly compatible to the environment, no roads, traffic cops, prisons, no oil wars, and with a little breeding gene therapy and chemical manipulation who knows how fast etc.... the horse can be? if the minds in the motore industry instead took to biology and such we could produce something great, a war horse as big as elephant that runs faster than a cheetah?
Next product for Tesla in the future will involve augmented reality. The car is doing it right now. What else do you expect next.
This is like watching Siri talk to Alexa
Can we see Tesla city in future. Where every products we use is of Tesla company.
I don’t think people recognize how important interviews with Elon musk are, this man is single-handedly trying to get humanity past the first level of human life expansion
Was a bit surprised Lex kept asking questions about user input to the autopilot considering Elon stated like 4-5 times that the autopilot would be safer than a human driver. I think Elon was a bit perplexed as well
And I just bought a new manual transmission...🤔
2 Elon Musks, sitting in a room.
As I drive around in the snow and listen to this podcast the question I have is how will these cars do in a snow covered road?
The Magic Carpet Ride
Your Austin lesbian complex is on fire, you should do something about it.
Human passenger or driver intervention makes autonomous cars less safe means that the autonomy is engineered for the outside world and not so much the inside. Any thoughts on that?
Lex: “You only have a certain amount of money” Elon: “And I took that personally”
I'm pretty sure the "matrix hack" in question is duct taping 35 to look like 85
I'm not sure I like universal autopilot as a concept. Moving is a human action.
Human supervised autopilot is obviously better. The autopilot will have failure modes. providing a backup with different failure modes will drastically reduce total failures.
The analogy to twinjets is poor. Most commercial airliners have engines widely spaced enough that if one goes out the other has to be throttled way down to avoid an uncontrollable yaw moment
i dont think you can have a worthy conversation with a businessman about the intricacies of his work especially if his financial state depends on the stock value. Elon is basically shilling his car with every answer, nothing else.
Fascinating conversation, but one thing that never seems to be addressed is the fact that the majority of people who drive cars are people who need them to go to work to make their meager salaries and can only afford a few thousand dollars to buy a used vehicle. They will never be in a position to afford the kind of vehicles being discussed in this conversation.
Elon's eyes when speaking matter of fact vs thinking about what he is saying is downright creepy, but very telling of how intelligent he is.
Horses are very autonomous, so long as you are ok going where they want to..
Electronic curb cut effect comes to mind. I wondered if the HMI has a description framework for blind users as well. QNX's JNEXT framework exposed an easier system to develop such a thing with the CAR2 platform but I haven't seen any of Teslas schematics. To me that seems like a possibly fractal concept for anything manufactured digital or otherwise. It will be exciting to see the future after automated driving, thank you.
This was almost as great a conversation as the first Rogan/Musk talk... then they started talking about the pandemic, a subject neither knows any more than the rest of us. Elon musk is a legend and motivated me into cryptocurrency and i'm lucky to find this legit company with this legit female trader called Mai_trades via instagram who taught me how to trade bitcoin without lost,God bless her abundantly.
Lex at 17:09 : “So let me start injecting the human into this.discussion a little bit...” I’m still waiting...
