The world's last turntable ferry has a really clever design
Tom Scott
In Glenelg, on the west coast of Scotland, there's the Skye Ferry: the last turntable ferry in the world. And the reason for that turntable is a lot more clever than I initially thought.

Thanks to all the team at the Skye Ferry!

It's a good thing that the SNP have had nothing to do with this successful Ferry project ... ! 😁 Maybe this idea should be exported to other Countries that could benefit a lot by this common-sense and practical solution ... Africa & South America are certainly places where I have seen videos of places that could benefit from this approach involving minimal infrastructure cost and maintenance ... Fascinating story. Thanks.

Engineers can solve problems if someone sets them to it. But no gov't sics a pack of engineers on the issue of the average temperatures pushing toward the edge of where humans can survive. No pack of engineers is sent to solve overconsumption or waste or overshoot of the industrial revolution and overshoot of control of everything by capital.

My Dad was the last lighthouse keeper to service Kylerhea lighthouse (visible in the wide shots) before they all went automated, I grew up zipping up & down that strait with him in our wee dinghy... The ferryman greatly understated how wild the currents are through there. They're loads of fun in a wee small boat, especially when the outboard cuts out. :)

The Western Isles ferries are a small holiday cruise all in their own. I was kayaking up the Kyles of Bute and watched the Colintraive ferry leave for Rhubodach, less than two minutes away. The ramps do not fully engage on the crossing AND the safety message starts obviously when the ferry leaves and finishes just as it arrives at its destination...I was laughing so much and so loudly that I expect everyone there heard me as I stood off waiting to be able to continue paddling. The waters around the Western Isles and Firth of Clyde are extremely dangerous. Even though the Kyles SEEM calm, the underwater currents are not...and definitely not for wild swimming. Dry suit, helmet, PFD, VHF and SOS beacon at all times please!

Well no offense but all these described problems of high / low water, strong and changing current (upto 10 km/s) even waves from other big ships and strong wind, the boat never in the direction where it moves, narrow space, they exist here up the river Rhine in Mannheim. The ferry goes from Altrip to Mannheim-Neckarau. (just next to biggest coal plant in Germany "GKM") We have roll on roll of ferries since one can remember. Assume 19' thirties at least. Altrip was founded by Romans. Therefore again No offense one can think if this Scotland ferry as well in the sense of "stick to the old - despite there is a new technology"?

I can't be the only person who sees the need to take that turn or risk landing in water and getting a little scared, even as an experienced driver. Maybe it's just my fear of heights kicking in, but on most roads - if you misjudge a curve, you hit grass, or a ditch. If you misjudge this curve, you land in very fast river currents. At the very least, hopefully it's never a slippery slope.

Let me get this straight, they are using the ramp as the breakwater, and designed a turntable to drop cars onto the breakwater instead of another suitably placed ramp behind breakwaters. and these guys were worldwide powerhouses in the 18th century? to much lager
